Russia unlikely to be affected by possible US tariffs on Iran trade partners: expert

Russia is unlikely to be significantly impacted by any potential US tariffs imposed on Iran’s trade partners, an expert said, according to a PTI report, citing Moscow’s existing insulation from Western economic measures.

The assessment comes amid renewed discussion in the United States over the use of tariffs and secondary sanctions targeting countries engaged in trade with Iran. Analysts quoted by PTI said Russia’s current trade structure and sanctions exposure limit the scope of any additional impact.

According to the expert cited in the report, Russia’s trade with Iran is already conducted largely outside Western financial systems, reducing vulnerability to US-led tariff measures. The expert added that Moscow has, over recent years, adjusted to operating under extensive sanctions.

The report noted that Russia and Iran have expanded bilateral cooperation in energy, transport and trade, often relying on alternative payment mechanisms and local currencies. These arrangements, analysts said, further reduce the effectiveness of tariff-based pressure.

The expert also pointed out that Russia’s broader economic strategy has increasingly focused on Asia, the Middle East and other non-Western markets, limiting dependence on trade channels that could be directly affected by US policy actions.

While the US has previously used tariffs and sanctions as tools to curb Iran’s economic activity, PTI reported that the effectiveness of such measures varies depending on the exposure and integration of targeted countries with the US-led financial system.

The report did not indicate that any new US tariffs have been formally announced or specify a timeline for potential implementation. No official response from Russian authorities was cited in connection with the assessment.
